October 11th is recognized across the United States as National Coming Out Day. The Iowa State Pride Summit is providing the Iowa State University community with a week of events to raise awareness, educate, engage in dialogue, and celebrate the coming out process. Coming Out Week Kick-Off

Description: Join leaders of Iowa State's LGBTQQIA+ organizations as we celebrate the beginning of ISU's Coming Out Week. The kick-off will feature information on all of the upcoming events as well as opportunities to meet the nine LGBTQQIA organizations across campus. A short program will begin at 5:00pm. Refreshments will be served.


Layers of Love: Tie-Blankets for Project Linus

Location: Margaret Sloss Women's Center, Sloss House

Time: 6:00 - 8:00pm

Description: Provide security and comfort for a child in need! For $5, you can make a fleece tie-blanket for a child in need in the Story County/Des Moines area. We will have volunteers on hand - no prior experience needed! Not into crafts? We will also be holding a drive for products on the Wish Lists for two local organizations: ACCESS and Youth and Shelter Services. Project Linus is a non-profit organization dedicated to "Providing Security Through Blankets" for children and teens in need. Nationally, Project Linus has donated more than 5 million handmade blankets to help comfort children in need in hospitals, shelters, and hospices. Project Linus has 368 chapters in the United States. The Story County Chapter serves youth in Story, Boone, and Polk counties.

Description: Cyd Zeigler is one of the world’s leading experts on LGBT sports issues, a cofounder of, and coauthor of The Outsports Revolution: Truth & Myth in the World of Gay Sports. He has written extensively on athletes coming out at all levels of sports and the impact homophobia has on closeted athletes. Most recently he was on the team that developed and helped execute the strategy for Michael Sam's coming out before the NFL draft. An award-winning journalist, Ziegler is credited with breaking various national stories, including the coming out of former professional athletes John Amaechi and Wade Davis, the groundbreaking interview with straight ally and NFL Hall of Famer Michael Irvin, and the first openly transgender college basketball player, Kye Allums.
